Blow-Dry Like a Pro!!

Blow-drying your own hair can be quite challenging. For us it's all about being extremely thorough with every single section and being able to adjust to all different hair textures. Here's our expert tips:

The Tool Box
Blow Dryer: Ionic blow-dryers are formulated with nanotechnology, which helps to better distribute the heat, break down water molecules and dry your hair in half the time
Flat Brush: When your hair is wet and you want to tame frizz, use a flat brush. Hold the blow-dryer in one hand, against the teeth of the flat brush, as you comb through the hair. We recommend the Marilyn New Yorker brush. It is a boar bristle brush with one nylon quill in the center and an exquisite wood handle. The softer than usual pad, allows for improved hold and easier movement through your hair.

Round Brush: The size of the barrel on your round brush determines the type of blow-out you do. A large or extra large barrel gives you a straighter look, while a smaller barrel helps you get more of a curl or wave. Our choices for a round brush are the Marilyn Tuxedo Pro, where the bristles are angled to the barrel to help create volume, and the Marilyn Futuro R. The Futuro R has a specifically designed grip with a bulbous form to help significantly reduce elbow pain, and works well to help create volume and body.

Diffuser: A diffuser attachment is primarily used on curly hair, but you may also use one when drying a roller set or pincurl set. If you have curly/wavy hair, lightly tousle hair with fingers and let it fall toward the diffuser.

On The Air
Always: Make sure your hair is clean before you blow-dry your hair. Start off using a medium or warm heat, otherwise if the heat is too hot, you may scorch the hair and make it frizzy.
Never: Never let your blow-dryer turn toward the back because that is where the fan is located. You run the risk of having your hair sucked in, burning your hair and shortening the circuit in your blow-dryer.
Long Hair: Sectioning the hair is always key to a great blow-out. Part your hair in four sections and blow-dry it, section by section, from the base to the ends.
Short Hair: A diffuser attachment is great for short hairstyles. Spray finishing products on the sides and use the diffuser to seal in the hairstyle and make sure it stays in place.

Volume: If you have straight hair, rough-dry it with your fingers and set it in large velcro rollers. If you have curly hair, blow-dry your hair using a round brush, then set it on rollers.
Straight: It is important to make sure you put a little tension on the hair when you want to blow-dry it straight. Tilt your head a little to one side while blow-drying with a brush.
Bangs: Blow-dry your bangs first before you dry the rest of your hair. Divide the fringe into two sections and use a medium round brush to feather each section down toward your eyebrows.
Curls: Avoid over-drying your curls, it takes away natural moisture, disrupting your curl pattern. In order to prevent frizz, avoid moving the hair around too much.

Seven Habits That Can Cause Premature Aging

1. Cigarette Smoke
If you smoke regularly or are constantly around people who smoke, it causes skin to age faster. Not to mention the other damaging aspects associated with it. Exposure to the harmful smoke is known to increase skin wrinkles and dryness, thereby contributing to the whole premature aging process. Vitamin C is a very vital ingredient in keeping your skin healthy, plump and moist. When you are around a smoker, the smoke let out uses up all the Vitamin C from your body, thus depriving your skin the nutrients required to maintain the glow. Research also shows that damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke is more or less the same as that caused by ultraviolet rays.

2. Sun Exposure
It is a known fact that sun exposure can cause damage to skin and also make it look aged. Skin that is unprotected and exposed to the sun for long hours give it a mottled appearance and also takes on a leathery and dry look. Other issues include freckles becoming dark and obvious sun spots, an increase in wrinkles and sagging of the skin. But with that said, sun exposure is rather unavoidable and so the only thing you can do is to minimize the damage or work toward improving the condition of your sun damaged skin. See an esthetician who will be able to prescribe a regime for the existing sun damage and use a strong sunscreen, preferably with SPF 15 or higher, that will protect your skin from both Ultra Violet-B rays. Not protecting your skin adequately from sun damage can also make it prone to kin cancer. 3. Lack of Exercise
Not having an exercise routine also affects skin conditions. Exercises makes your muscles toned and keeps the blood flowing which helps your skin in more ways than one. Lack of exercise means loss of muscle tone and strength, making your skin sag and ultimately leading to the aged look. So a good exercise regime, along with a healthy diet is the best way to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh even at an older age. Not to mention the energy and confidence you gain out of looking and feeling younger.

4. Exposure to Cold Weather
As sunlight is harmful to the skin, freezing temperatures and cold winds do their share of harm, as well. The extreme weather conditions make the skin dry, therby contributing to aging skin. You are also tempted to spend longer hours in heated rooms, which also makes the skin drier. So, in such situations turn to a good quality moisturizer and apply it generously on your face, even when you are indoors. This will moisten your skin to an extent, reducing the damage the cold weather has on your skin.

5. Alcohol Use
Like smoking, consuming alcohol also plays a pivotal role in premature aging by dilating the small blood vessels in the skin and increasing the blood flow near the surface of the skin. As time progresses, these blood vessels become permanently damaged, thereby creating a flushed look with coarse skin and broken veins. Another disadvantage is the fact that alcohol consumption causes dehydration of the skin limiting it from absorbing the nutrients required for healthy skin. Dehydrated skin ages much more quickly causing deeper lines and wrinkles.

6. Stress
Stress promotes worry lines on your face. Frowning over a period of time causes the facial muscles to conform to that shape, thereby causing wrinkle lines and sagging. Be highly aware of your stress levels and if possible try and change your facial expressions as much as you can during the day. Relaxing exercises involving meditation and yoga can perhaps lighten your stress, therby taking away those worry lines that cause aging.

7. Lack of Sleep
A good nights sleep is essential for skin to look younger and healthier. If you don't attain that, your face will give way to dark circles and bags under the eyes, ultimately making you look and feel tired. Lack of sleep also causes the skin to sag, another major factor leading to aging. Also, proper sleep keeps you refreshed and energetic throughout the day.

To usher it in is the familiar Chinese New Year tradition of feasting. We've got nothing against an annual gorge-fest at the Peking Duck House, but we figured there must be some wellness traditions to go along with the consuming of calories and the delivering of cash (in little red envelopes).

Nothing breaks my heart more than a girl who plucks her eyebrows within an inch of her their life. The big brow has made a major comeback in the last few years-dating back to the likes of Brooke Shields and Audrey Hepburn-and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

But what of us girls who have pale blonde brows, or dark but not nearly as thick?

Well ladies, we're very pleased to share our new trick! We combined two products that we already adored: Jane Iredale's PureBrow Gel with Aveda's Pure Abundance Hairspray. Together they add the perfect amount of color, shape and hold to fake thicker brows.

1. First dab the PureBrow brush on some tissue to get off some of the excess cream.

3. From there, pump a little bit of the hairspray in the palm of your hand, dabbing your finger in it, and then lightly touching it to the brow without disrupting the shape.

4. Last but not least, take a Q-tip and run it right along the very top of the brow to get off any color bleeding outside the line and fixing the combed-straight-up look.

Treating Chapped Winter Skin

The cold, lack of humidity, extreme temperature changes, forced air heating and blustery winds combine to wreak havoc on exposed skin-namely the face. Under ideal conditions, the skin on our face produces a natural protective coating called the hydrolipidic film. Skin with a larger pore size delivers more oil and creates a thicker hydrolipidic film for its surface. The smaller the pore size, the less oil there is available for protecting the face. This hydrolipidic film not only protects against nature's aresenal of harmful elements, but also seals in the body's natural hydration, water.

Your home care regimen is very important. Because of our region's distinct seasonal differences, we rarely advise guests to have the same home routine in the summer as they would in the winter. Summer is for deep pore cleansing, stronger cleansers, more aggressive exfoliation and lighter moisturizers. Winter, of course, is the opposite including the use of creamy, pH balanced cleansers, less aggressive exfoliation and heavier, protective moisturizers and eye creams. Cleansers start the home care regimen. Some lines will have hydrating ingredients such as urea and alantoin in their cleansers. You can actually start hydrating skin in the cleansing stage. Toners are then used to keep or balance the skin's pH. Make sure your toner is alcohol free. Next, in case of extremely dry, dehydrated skin, we recommend a hydrating serum to be applied and allowed to penetrate. Followed by a serum with a thicker, protective cream. This cream will protect and create a barrier with ingredients like lavendar, zinc oxide and/or micronized titanium oxide. As mentioned before, a substantial eye cream is the final step. And while you shouldn't eliminate alpha and beta hydroxy acid exfoliating products from home care programs, you can either reduce the frequency of use or use a product with a lesser percentage by volume. It's a good idea to have a minimum SPF of 15 built into a daytime moisturizer or serum. The last thing a guest should do is get sunburned, which will encourage winter skin problems.

Last, but definitely not least, is the issue of protecting the lips. Avoid waxy lip products that may provide some protection, but rarely offer any pentetrating hydration. Instead, look for a balm or cream formulation with an SPF 15 and ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil, which protect and hydrate. You can also look for products with hydrolized wheat protein, which moisturizes while building collagen and firming the lips. Applying a lipstick over this type of product would be just fine. Unless you hibernate with the bears, our wish is for these common sense ideas to help you keep your skin hydrated, soft, smooth, youthful and radiant this winter season.

Do you know how to relax?

When was the last time you did absolutely nothing? As overworked people, we tend to take a type-A approach even when it comes to relaxation. We jam massage and acupuncture appointments in between meetings. We dash to yoga class. Even a meditation practice can become a task that requires energy and focus. Guess what? For health, happiness, and basic sanity, we need time to completely chill, unplug, and do absolutely nothing, say experts. We asked three experts why it's so important to just stare out a window, and for tips on how to make it happen.

"I designate at least four hours a week to do nothing. My rule is that I cannot produce any measurable result during that time or tick off any other commitments or promises. This basically leaves...napping, staring out a window, reading for pleasure, playing games, journaling, making art...It has to be restorative. We must absolutely take this time for our well-being---all doctors, philosophers, religions and spiritual leaders agree on this fact. The thing is, people mostly "steal" or sneak this time rather than designing it, planning it, and setting it aside. I recommend owning up to the fact that you need and desire time off every day and designing it in advance. You won't know how good (and mature) that feels until you've tried it."

Is Blonde Right For You?

If at least two of the following apply to you, it may be time to look on the bright side:

You were blonde(ish) as a child. "If your hair was fair when you were small, especially by summer's end, you probably have the right skin tone to pull off blonde as an adult," says Brad Johns, global director for Clairol (who has colored Natasha Richardson's hair).

You can afford regular maintenance. "Being blonde is not cheap," says Johns. "Think of blonde hair as the ultimate accessory-the one you never take off! You must keep it in excellent shape with regular touch-ups and proper products."

You're okay being a man magnet. "It's no coincidence that blonde is the most popular hair color in Los Angeles-where it's all about getting noticed," says Jennifer J (Cate Blanchett is a client). Johns adds, "I can assure you it's the shade men prefer."

How to be the Best Blonde:
1. Keep it cool. "Opt for a cool or neutral shade rather than something warm (often marked 'golden' or 'honey')," says Julia Youssef, executive director of L'Oreal Paris's Hair Color Technical Center and Product Evaluation. "Lightening naturally warms up your hair; if you choose a warm-colored dye, you may end up too (orangey) gold."

2. Avoid Alcohol. "Bottle blondes may suffer from dry, dull hair, and using products that contain high amounts of alcohol can make the problem worse," says Johnathan Gale, a colorist at the Serge Normant for John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles (he's responsible for Charlize Theron's gilded locks). Common alcohol-containing culprits: hairspray, gel, and mousse; check the label.

3. Leave the whitening to your teeth. "Many women equate cool, white strands with elegance," says Johns, "but the reality is that having overly platinum hair can leave you looking tired." A better approach? Ask your colorist to create a golden base, then add cooler highlights.

4. Let a pro handle the hard stuff. "If you want to take your color more than two shades lighter than your natural hue, visit a salon," says Jennifer J. Attempting a job this delicate yourself is risky-and you may end up more banana than honey-blonde.

Makeup tips for blondes:
-Peach tones are universally flattering to blondes, says Dorf.
-If you opt for red lips, keep them sheer and limit the hue to evenings, says Dorf

Is Red Right for You?

If at least two of the following apply to you, it may be right to go ruby:

Your skin is on the pink side. There is a "right" red out there for most women, says Jennifer J, a Matrix celeb colorist an owner of Juan Juan Salons in Southern California (she colors Julia Roberts' auburn mane), but women with cool or pinkish skin pull it off best. Conversely, women with golden or olive skin have a tougher time finding one that's flattering.

You're no wallflower. Red is a head-turning hue, and you have to be self-assured enough to accept the stares, says Tasha Forgash, color specialist at Shag Salon in Boston. Colorist Sarah Gold, the guru behind Lindsay Lohans formerly flame colored hair, concurs: "Remember, red hair is like a sequined dress-it walks into the room before you do."

Your hair is in fairly good condition. If your strands are very dry or damaged, they will have a hard time holding on to small, red color molecules (which seep out of even the healthiest hair fairly quickly). Your mane has a better chance of becoming a radiant red if it is well cared for (read: you deep-condition weekly, get regular trims and don't heat-style every day).

How to be the best redhead:
1. Wash your hair as infrequently as possible. Ideally this would mean twice a week, says Parvine Klein, a colorist at the John Barrett Salon in New York City, but every other day will suffice if your hair is oily or very fine, says Jennifer J. On alternate days, you can rinse your hair with tepid (never hot) water if necessary-or dust your roots with a dry shampoo. Our stylists suggest trying BB Hair Powder.

2. Avoid harsh shampoos. Most dandruff treatments are tough on colored hair, says Jennifer J. But they are death to redheads, accelerating the fading process by weeks.

You are mousy brown now. Your natural color lacks the vibrancy of richer browns and virtually begs to be deepened.

You want a low-maintenance regimen. Unless you are naturally very blonde, the upkeep for brown hair is fairly easy, says Julia Youssef, executive director of L'Oreal Paris' Hair Color Technical Center and Product Evaluation.

Your hair is damaged and dull. Dark hair color reflects light best, hides breakage, and minimizes the flaws of abused tresses.

How to be the best brunette:
1. Match your brown to your haircut. To maximize the impact of your chocolaty color, go deeper and monotone if your hair is nearly all one length. If it's shorter or very layered, make the ends slightly lighter, and weave in high- and lowlights to emphasize the texture of the cut, says Marie Robinson, a colorist at the Sally Hershberger Salon in New York City (clients include Natalie Portman).

Our holiday party is right around the corner and we are so excited! Of course we are all talking about what we are going to wear, but hey, this is WM DaySpa Salon, and you know it's really all about the makeup and hair! Party season is in full swing. You wouldn't wear the same thing twice, would you wear the same makeup? Here's a long-wearing, surprisingly fresh and shimmering look to take you right through New Years Eve.

1. Start with a gorgeous glow: Apply Confidence In Touch Cream Blush to the apples of the cheeks with the Foundation Brush. Blend up and out.

2. Lighten and brighten any dark or red areas under the eyes or around the nose with Active Light. Using the ring finger, blend with a press and roll motion.

3.) For flawless skin, use Amazing Base because of the dewy, lustrous finish, it is perfect for this look. Mist with Hydration Spray.

4.) Draw on the gold end of Double Dazzle all over the lid up to the crease as a base. Gently blend with the ring finger.

5.) Use the Deluxe Shader Brush to press Glimmer Gold Pure Pressed EyeShadow over the entire lid, blending up past the crease.

6.) Use the same brush or the finger to press 24-Karat Gold Dust into the center of the lid.

8.) Line the top lash line thickly with Gold Liquid Eye Liner.

5 Tips for Better Cool Weather Hair

1.) Conditioner is your BEST friend! While you should be conditioning year-round, it becomes especially important during the winter months. Cold weather and dry heat easily suck moisture from your already thirsty tresses. If you don't keep a regular deep conditioning schedule, now is the time to start one.

2.) Trim well and trim often. Since hair is dryer during the winter months, it is more prone to damage and breakage. Regular trims become even more important to prevent split ends and breakage from moving even further up the hair shaft causing you to need to cut more later.

3.) Avoid brushing your hair too often and reach for a wide-toothed comb instead. Cold air + wind = dry brittle hair that tangles easily. If you know you are prone to tangles or will be amongst outdoor elements that will cause tangles, cover your hair from the cold wind with a loose cap or scarf and keep a wide-toothed comb in your purse to gently comb hair out from time to time, preventing massive tangles at the end of the day.

4.) Shampoo less often even than you did during the warmer months. Your hair needs all the moisture it can get! Washing your hair every day during the cold months is equally as bad (if not worse) than a weekly head dunking in a chlorinated pool during the summer months. Remember, tap water contains a number of chemicals too!

5.) Bring on the cold, not the heat. This may sound crazy, but it's the best for your hair! When you do wash your hair, wash in lukewarm (not scalding) water and end with a cold water rinse. Super hot water steals even more moisture from your strands and super cold water seals moisture in. Additionally, avoid the blow dryer if you can, but if you can't, dry on a cooler heat setting. Your tresses will thank you!

**TIP** While following all five of these tips will help fight the dreaded static electricity, try spraying a small amount of finishing spray on your comb and run from root to tip to smoothe those extra stubborn flyaways.
